Beach clean success
A two hour beach clean by the Thanet Coast Project has seen 24
bags of rubbish and a huge tyre cleared from Pegwell Bay.
The clean up, which took place on Sunday, involved year seven
and eight students from Ursuline College and the Hartsdown Outdoor
Pursuits Groups.
The young people were also able to explore the chalk cliffs,
rockpools and the sea caves at Pegwell during a walk around the
bay, towards Ramsgate’s Western Undercliff.
The beach clean is the first community event held by the Thanet
Coast Project in 2008. Last year, their education and community
events were attended by 7,415 people and, when their events for the
general public are added in, the attendance level rises to more
than 10,000 people.
Thanet Coast Project Education Officer Naomi Biggs said: “It was
a great way to kick off the Thanet Coast Project's community events
for 2008, partly because the sun was shining, but mostly because
the young people were a joy to work with. They were as shocked as I
was to see how much litter had collected in the bay over the winter
and were hugely motivated to clear away as much as they could
during their time on the beach.”
