Tidal tidy-up around Thanet
Local people can volunteer to help out with a tidal tidy-up
around the coast of Thanet this month. (September)
Organised by the Marine Conservation Society, Beachwatch is an
nationwide event held annually, aiming to clean up Britain’s
beaches and also analyse the amount and different types of litter
collected by volunteers. It’s taking place over the weekend of
Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September.
Beachwatch events to record and clear up beach litter are
planned all along the Thanet coastline over the weekend, organised
by both the Thanet Coast Project and the local volunteers:
Saturday 15 September:
- 10am (3hrs) Pegwell Bay. Meet at the beach below former
hoverport access road, Cliffsend (organised by the Thanet Coast
Project)
- 10am (1½hrs) St. Mildred’s Bay. Meet next to Pav's Cafe
(organised by the Bay Association Volunteers)
- 10am (2hrs) Margate Main Sands. Meet next to beach cafe
(organised by the Local Marine Conservation Volunteers 01843
295481).
Sunday 16 September
- 10am (3hrs) Plumpudding, along the northern sea wall. Meet
outside 'The Minnis Restaurant, Minnis Bay, Birchington (organised
by the Thanet Coast Project)
- 10am (2hrs) Walpole Bay. Meet close to Tidal Pool (organised by
the Local Marine Conservation Volunteers 01843 295481).
Two further beach cleans have also been organised by the Thanet
Coast Project later in the month:
Saturday 22 September
- 2pm (3hrs) Pegwell Beach Clean. Meet on the beach below the
former hoverport access road, Cliffsend.
Sunday 23 September
- 2pm (3hrs) Coldharbour Beach Clean. Meet outside 'The Minnis
Restaurant, Minnis Bay, Birchington
Tony Child, Thanet Coast Project Manager, said: “We want as many
people to join in with this month’s beach cleans as possible. We’ve
got a beautiful – and unique – internationally important coastline
here in Thanet and this is a chance for people to do something by
helping record and tidy up beach litter. Out main cleans help to
tackle some of the less accessible bays and beaches around the
Thanet coastline that can end up with litter. The items that we
find over the Beachwatch weekend will provide valuable information
and data for the Marine Conservation Society, who assess year on
year whether beaches across the country are getting cleaner and
where the problems that wash up on our shoreline are coming
from.”
Beach cleans are part of the autumn events lined by the Thanet
Coast Project. Further information about these events and about how
to book your place online can be found at http://www.thanetcoast.org.uk/ or
