Beach life a success in Dane Park

Over 700 people turned out to celebrate the start of summer at Oi! Life’s a Beach event organised by Thanet District Council in Dane Park in Margate, Kent.

The free event was held to promote over 600 events taking place during the school holidays for young people in Thanet and to launch the consultation on a new youth strategy for Thanet through a special edition of the popular Oi! magazine, which is produced by a core editorial team from the Marlowe Academy with contributions from teens all over Thanet.

The events are being organised by 23 different groups, including Thanet District Council, Hang 10, Sport 4 NRG, Pie Factory Music, Pipeline, Thanet Coast Project, Kent Youth Service, Broadstairs Folk Week and a range of others, who all work with young people.

The Oi! Magazine, which stands for ‘Outspoken Indvidual’ is produced by pupils at the Marlowe Academy, Ramsgate and this issue has been produced in association with the Engaging Youth Forum and Thanet District Council. Copies can be picked up at sports centres, doctors’ surgeries, Visitor Information Centres,

Nearly a 100 young people also took the chance to give their views on what they would like to see improved in the future, as part of the Council’s Youth Matters consultation, which will help to inform the new youth strategy. Everyone completing a questionnaire, which can be found in Oi! magazine will be entered into a competition, where the top prize is £100 in vouchers for a shop of their choice, with 20 runners up prizes of £10 worth of vouchers each.

Cllr. Jo Gideon, Cabinet Member for Health and Communities, who was at the event on Friday, said: “There was an amazing amount of things for people to try out at Life’s a Beach and that really sets the scene for the whole school holidays. The Engaging Youth Forum have done a great job of drawing together all the activities that young people can take part in over the next few weeks and there really is something for everyone, whether they enjoy surfing, sports, being out on the coast or taking part in music and drama. There’s certainly no excuse for anyone to say they’re bored and there’s plenty going on for young people in Thanet this summer.”

Madeleine White, MD of creativeuk solutions, publishing partners of Oi! magazine said: “This summer, Oi! is the one place where young people can find out about the hundreds of events being put on for them during the holidays and give their views on what matters most to them. Oi! is a magazine for teens by teens and is a unique way of giving our young people a voice. This is why it has been a really good exercise for everyone involved with Oi! to work with the Engaging Youth Forum and Thanet District Council on this project and thus making this voice mean something. For example our editorial team have been able to have their say on what should go in the questionnaire and have also picked out their favourites of all the summer activities on offer. “

Engage Summer Blast includes events organised by 23 different groups, including Thanet District Council, Hang 10, Sport 4 NRG, Pie Factory Music, Pipeline, Thanet Coast Project, Kent Youth Service, Broadstairs Folk Week and a whole range of others, who all work with young people.
