SeaART success
This summer’s SeaART2007 exhibitions and workshops have been the
most successful art projects undertaken by the Thanet Coast Project
with local artists.
Four contemporary art exhibitions at different venues
highlighted works by local artists from around North East Kent,
inspired or influenced by our sea or coastal environment.
Contemporary artworks are on show at the Community Pharmacy Gallery
and Old Town Gallery, in Margate’s Old Town, while Artwork and
PhotoSeaART can be seen at Cliftonville Library and at the new
Look-Out Gallery at Broadstairs Harbour.
In addition, over 20 new art workshops involving Marine Mosaic
making, BeachART, Coast on Camera and a new Metal Work Sculpture
for Margate have accompanied the exhibitions. All these start or
take place at the Community Pharmacy Gallery, 16 Market Place,
Margate CT9 1ES. Details and bookings are available online at
www.thanetcoast.org.uk All are provided free for local people,
thanks to support from the Safer Stronger Communities Fund.
Tony Child, Thanet Coast Project Manager said: “An incredible
100 local artists and photographers have come forward this year to
contribute to over 230 individual exhibits for the summer
SeaART2007 exhibition. It is just amazing and our biggest
collaboration and variety of exhibits with local artists yet! In
particular, I would like to thank the work put in by local artist
Ruth Cutler for helping put together these exhibitions, together
with all the staff of the galleries involved. The exhibitions would
not be possible without all the artists who have taken the time and
trouble to contribute to the exhibitions.”
He added: “Our new Management Scheme for the North East Kent
European Marine sites, drawn up by community representatives in
workshops last year, suggested a new Thanet Coast Arts Project.
SeaART2007 provides us with another step forward towards achieving
that and building links with artists who can help to deliver
that.”
Cllr. Shirley Tomlinson, Cabinet Member for Commercial and
Environmental Services, said: “SeaART has provided another way of
viewing our beautiful coastline and this is a great example of the
Thanet Coast Project’s innovative work and the different ways that
they’re using to get their message across to people. It’s
particularly encouraging to see that the main SeaART exhibitions
and workshops are based in Margate’s Old Town, which we are
promoting as our main cultural quarter for the arts in Thanet. The
support of the Safer Stronger Communities Fund has also been
invaluable in opening these workshops up to everyone free of
charge.”
SeaART2007 has been possible with support from the Safer
Stronger Communities Fund, Thanet District Council and KCC
Libraries.
