Sea garden comes to Ramsgate
A new type of garden is being created this spring (April and
May) along the seafront in Ramsgate by the Thanet Coast
Project.
The former marina pool along Ramsgate’s Eastcliff at the north
end of the lower promenade car park will become home to the area’s
first sea garden in a project that’s being run in partnership with
Thanet District Council, Southern Water and Ramsgate artist Ruth
Cutler.
Volunteers are needed to help clear the site of litter and weeds
and to help Ruth enhance the flint and sand features which are
central to the design of the sea garden. An oak bench and
interpretation panel are currently being carved especially for the
site by designer Will Glanfield.
Two clean up days are being held, one on Saturday 5 April and
the other on Saturday 17 May, with two sessions on each day at 10am
and 2pm.
Tony Child, Thanet Coast Project Manager, said: “This is an
excellent opportunity for local people to help create and care for
a new community garden in Ramsgate. This rough plot of land is one
that does suffer from harsh conditions, with wind and salt from the
sea, so converting it into a sea garden is quite a challenge. When
it’s complete, the new sea garden will be an area for wild plants
and will be just the latest addition to centuries worth of new
gardens - like the pulhamite rock gardens - that have been created
in Ramsgate. We’d like to thank Thanet District Council and
Southern Water for their support in this project, which will be
highlighting the variety of coastal plants that can be used in
gardens that are drought resistant.”
