Living treasures on the Thanet coastline
Starfish and jellyfish are amongst the living treasures that
could be found on this summer’s Seashore Safaris around the Thanet
coastline.
A total of 12 safaris are being organised by the Thanet Coast
Project over the next few weeks across the area, with locations
including Birchington, Westgate, Cliftonville, Broadstairs and
Ramsgate. The two hour long sessions will allow both children and
adults alike to find out what lurks on the rocks and under the
water in the area’s rockpools.
Full details are as follows:
- Thurs 26 July 3.00pm Western Undercliff, Ramsgate
- Fri 27 July 4.00pm Westbrook (West promenade car park),
Margate
- Sat 28 July 5.00pm Walpole Bay, Cliftonville
- Sun 29 July 6.00pm Louisa Bay, Broadstairs

The safaris are part of the Engage Summer Blast, more than 600
events being put on for young people, during the school
holidays.
Thanet Coast Project Manager, Tony Child, said: “The Seashore
Safaris are a great outdoor activity for the family, even on a
rainy day! Over the last month, we’ve been finding unusual amounts
of starfish and jellyfish on our beautiful coastline, so we’re
hopeful that members of the public will help us to find some real
gems while we’re out on safari over the next few weeks. Our
coastline is an important European marine site, and all these
sightings will be added to the scientific data collated by the
county’s Biological Records Centre”
All Seashore Safaris are run with the help of volunteers from
the Thanet Coast Project and in conjunction with the Kent Wildlife
Trust. These and other events can all be booked online at http://www.thanetcoast.org.uk/ Alternatively,
