Summer of Sea Art
SeaART is coming to Thanet for the summer, with a series of art
exhibitions involving over eighty local artists, and new workshops
run by the Thanet Coast Project, with lead curator and artist Ruth
Cutler and different galleries over the next few weeks.
Funded by the Safer Stronger Communities Fund and Thanet
District Council, SeaART2007 runs from Saturday 4 August until Bank
Holiday Monday 27 August.
SeaART2007 exhibitions will be taking place across Thanet, with
the main focus at the Community Pharmacy Gallery in Margate, with
other exhibits at the Old Town Gallery in Margate Old Town,
PhotoSeaART in Cliftonville Library and more art on show in the Old
Lifeboatman’s Look-Out in Broadstairs Harbour. The public will also
get a chance to see wide ranging works by local artists and
photographers. Local artists will also be at work throughout the
SeaART exhibition in the Look Out Room in Broadstairs Harbour.
The SeaART workshops are a new addition to the programme this
year and, thanks to the SSCF they are all free to the public. All
of the workshops will be starting at the Community Pharmacy Gallery
in Market Place in Margate Old Town. Metal sculpture workshops are
open to 14 – 24 year olds and they will be working together over
four workshops to create a giant seascape sculpture, which it is
hoped will be featured in the regeneration of Margate and
Cliftonville West as a piece of public art.
Another set of workshops, marine mosaics, are being held, aimed
at three age groups, one for the under 14’s, one for 14 to 24 year
olds and for the over 14’s. After an introductory talk and
demonstration, this will be an excellent opportunity to produce an
individual piece of mosaic work based on an element of Thanet’s
coast and contribute towards a larger community piece.
The BeachART and Coast on Camera are ideal for the whole family
and meet at the Community Pharmacy Gallery, before heading down to
the beach to make sand sculptures for the BeachART sessions or to
photograph coastal observations in the Coast on Camera
sessions.
Thanet Coast Project Manager Tony Child said: “We are very
excited to be working so closely with local artists to offer
Thanet’s residents and visitors such a variety. This is the fourth
year that we have held collaborative Art Exhibitions with local
artists and they are getting better all the time. This year we have
linked up with a staggering number of local artists and is the best
so far. The new Art workshops offer a great variety of different
activities including mosaics, photography, beach art and metal
sculpture. This is a great opportunity for local people to learn
new skills and take inspiration from our fantastic coastline to
create their own masterpieces!”
Details of the exhibitions and workshops are on the Thanet Coast
Project’s website. Places for the workshops can be booked online
for free at www.thanetcoast.org.uk
